Who are the most famous members of the Fordham University Class of 1980?

Who are the most famous members of the Fordham University Class of 1980? Hard to say, but these folks are on Wikipedia-Well, that's good enough for me. (I would not be plastering their photos here otherwise; public figures and all that.) Their fields vary from academia to banking to law to music to politics to religion. Do you recognize any of these people? Remember, these are alumni from multiple campuses and different colleges. You probably don't know all of them, but do you remember at least one as a classmate? Anyone else who YOU think should be on this list?  Learn more about their accomplishments at: https://www.pinterest.fr/bergin0639/fordham-1980-classmates-in-sports-hall-of-fame/ #fordhamuniversityclassof1980

Nick Martinez Fordham Yes, But ...

Nick Martinez Fordham Yes, But ... July 10, 2021 When I glanced at the recent Twitter post from the Fordham University’s Athletic Director, Ed Kull, I saw the photo of Olympic Baseball player Nick Martinez. Much like so many of this alumni group’s Social Media photo offerings-myself included-he is no longer quite that young looking. Okay, here are a few details on the fellow Ram Mr Martinez: He graduated from Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in Miami, Florida , and enrolled at Fordham University . Nick is the 34th Fordham alumnus to make it to Major League Baseball (MLB). He was 1-3 with a 5.33 ERA in 15 games, over two seasons for Fordham as a relief pitcher. He spent most of his playing time as a second baseman. There he batted .295 with 4 HR, 66 RBI, 167 hits, and 22 stolen bases over three seasons and 148 games. Hit the Major Leagues as the Texas Rangers' 5th Starter He was formally selected to the 40-man roster on April 5th of 2014. It was during that Spring when Ni...

THE TRAGIC ERA OF THE FORDHAM UNIVERSITY RAMESES

THE TRAGIC ERA OF THE RAMESES  A Well Meaning Effort To Entertain And Inspire Fordham Sports Fans.   The history of this university's athletic endeavors is an impressive one: The Rose Hill Gym, which opened in 1925, is the oldest facility still used in NCAA Division-1 sports. The baseball team has the most wins over its 150+ years of interscholastic competition. The “Seven Blocks of Granite” identify as one of most famous nicknames in football history. Through much of this period real live rams were used to rally fan support. For most of these innocent animals, it was not a happy existence nor a proud chapter for our school.   The concept of an animal mascot is a tradition that may have had its origin as far back as 480 B.C. in Athens Greece with Athena’s feathered friend, the owl. Many institutions of higher learning, adopted this strong, fierce animal to rally their teams on to victory. As did the LA Rams and two competing schools in the Atlantic-10 conference...

Fordham Athletics Prepare For The World Where Students Can Now Earn Themselves A Living

Fordham Athletics Prepare For The World Where Students Can Now Earn Themselves A Living       Between the creation of new state laws and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rule changes that went into effect on July 1st of 2021, student athletes, across a large variety of sports now have new protections and opportunities to make money by selling their Name, Image and Likeness; now collectively referred to as (NIL) rights. {As of this writing there are no laws in place here in New York State.} To begin, colleges and universities won’t be paying their athletes. This will be the part of a new relationship students can enter into with a host of third parties. However, institutions-like Fordham-do have oversight of their athletes’ NIL deals.       More complicated questions are arising on such endorsements related to sports betting, sexually oriented businesses or the ability to endorse a firearm even if it may be available for l...

Vince Lombardi Sweater Sells For $43,000

Vince Lombardi Sweater Sells For $43,000        Next time you think your late grandma’s nicknacks, bric-a-brac or Chachkies are taking up too much space in the attic. Examine them very closely, before you set up a yard sale. There may be treasure right under your nose. Take a look how a Tennessee couple found the old sweater of the Fordham University and NFL football legend at a Goodwill for only 58 cents. In this photo of a young Vince Lombardi (FCRH Class of 1937) during his Army coaching days.   Lombardi wearing his West Point coaching sweater.        "I didn't see the Lombardi tag when we walked out with it or I might have made a connection," McEvoy said. "My wife (Rikki) saw it but she didn't know who that could be." The United States Military Academy (USMA) or West Point must have issued hundreds of those sweaters over the years? thought Sean McEvoy, a man who makes his living selling “vintage” clothing. He flipped the sweater inside-o...

Making It As A Writer?

Making It As A Writer? For alumni of-a-certain-age, it might be time to kick-back, smell the roses, stop frantically ripping open those monthly envelopes with the 401K numbers and start working on some of those “me” projects. Now, if your direction takes you to writing you must find the topic(s), the writing space, the time and the sticktoitiveness to complete that epic poem or your personal offering for the Great American Novel.  When it is finished, you would naturally sit back and wonder which you should pursue first: The financial reward or the artistic adoration? Perhaps you should meet Daina Smith (FCRH Class of 2008). You don’t know her-for good reason-but she has already completed 10 feature film scripts and 2 TV series. She has earned 2 options for her work and has two scripts current in pre-production with talent and award winning directors attached      (IMDb.com) “I wrote my first screenplay at ten years of age,” said the Westchester County nativ...
