Nick Martinez Fordham Yes, But ...
July 10, 2021
When I glanced at the recent Twitter post from the Fordham University’s Athletic Director, Ed Kull, I saw the photo of Olympic Baseball player Nick Martinez. Much like so many of this alumni group’s Social Media photo offerings-myself included-he is no longer quite that young looking.
Okay, here are a few details on the fellow Ram Mr Martinez: He graduated from Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in Miami, Florida, and enrolled at Fordham University.
Nick is the 34th Fordham alumnus to make it to Major League Baseball (MLB).
He was 1-3 with a 5.33 ERA in 15 games, over two seasons for Fordham as a relief pitcher. He spent most of his playing time as a second baseman. There he batted .295 with 4 HR, 66 RBI, 167 hits, and 22 stolen bases over three seasons and 148 games.
Hit the Major Leagues as the Texas Rangers' 5th Starter
He was formally selected to the 40-man roster on April 5th of 2014. It was during that Spring when Nick was promoted to the major leagues for the first time. In his inaugural career start, against the Tampa Bay Rays, Martinez pitched six innings. He struck out 3 batters and allowed three earned runs on four hits.
A 250 Million Man (However, that was in ¥en)
He spent approximately 4 years in the major leagues between 2014 and 2017.  He then left for the Japanese Leagues. In December of 2018, Nick signed with Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters for $2.2 million. He is currently playing for the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks.
Our Olympic Representative, from the Alma mater of our youth, will be turning 31 years old on August 5th of 2021. That is just about the time Team U.S.A. will begin competitive play in Tokyo.

Some Former Players That Local New York Fans May Remember

The team is a mix of minor league players and several “unaffiliated” former major leaguers as well. The 2020 (2021) U.S.A. Olympic Baseball Team includes a couple of former New York area players: David Robertson , 7+ years with NY Yankees. That included the 2009 World Series Championship team and the 2011 All-Star squad.

Mike Scioscia was a 3× World Series champion (1981, 1988, 2002).
