The Big Gray Cat

 The Big Gray Cat

A scared, sad feline once meowed at me.

Food? Best limited to a simple dish.

With all my life’s work I need to be free.

But the cupboard was stocked with tuna fish.

Came visits on days cold and days that swelled;

Playful stretching on the lawn, near my house.

Sat by the trees, or my auto’s tire well.

Mistake? No, front steps, gifted my dead mouse.

Was this a neighbor or was it a stray?

Proud, eager, the body of a large male,

Knowingly looked at me but would not stay.

Large paws, fine hair and a handsome, thick tail.

Winter nears, walk the streets, found his home,

He can visit, glad he is not alone.
